Airtel Payments Bank, Frontier Markets and the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth today announced the launch of She Leads Bharat:Udyam, an initiative to elevate 100,000 women-owned small businesses with resources, tools and opportunities to grow and diversify their incomes. The announcement was made at the Asia Inclusive Growth Forum, an event convening over 100 cross-sector leaders for candid, impact-driven dialogues on advancing inclusive growth in India and across the global south.

In this first phase, this initiative will enable 100,000 women-owned small businesses in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh to learn and earn via Frontier Markets’ proprietary, flexible Meri-Saheli platform. 10,000 of these women small business owners will be further enabled to grow their business by becoming Airtel Payments Bank Business Correspondents (BCs) and unlock additional revenue streams. This is aligned with the Bank’s vision of ‘Empowering India with Accessible and Inclusive Banking.’

“Taking our commitment forward to empower women in rural India to embark on their entrepreneurial endeavours, we are collaborating with Frontier Markets and Mastercard on She Leads Bharat:Udyam,” said Anubrata Biswas, MD&CEO, Airtel Payments Bank. “We take pride to welcome them on board as Business Correspondents, joining hands with our existing network of 50,000 women BCs who play a vital role in taking banking and financial services to underserved rural pockets of the country. We look forward to our journey in building a financially inclusive economy.”

The partners envision She Leads Bharat:Udyam helping to expand access to financial services, delivering a new blueprint for serving rural markets and extending women-owned small businesses with support tailored to their needs.

“More women entrepreneurs are coming into India’s workforce and adding energy to the economy. When these business owners can access credit and digital tools, they can keep expanding and become more resilient. That’s good for their families, employees and communities. That’s what inclusive growth is all about,” said Ari Sarker, President Asia Pacific, Mastercard.

Women-owned small businesses face challenges that can often prevent them from achieving their full potential. In India, women-owned micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) constitute 20% of all MSMEs yet receive only 5% of the total financing provided by public-sector banks.<1> They are often less digitized<2> and receive less training to build their businesses<3>. However, when properly supported, women entrepreneurs are more likely to hire women, more likely to repay credit and more likely to share increased income with their families and communities, serving as core drivers of inclusive economic growth.

She Leads Bharat:Udyam is a first-of-its-kind initiative that brings together the private sector, social enterprise, and philanthropy in the banking, financial services, and insurance sector to demonstrate a digital-first model designed to unlock ways for women-owned small businesses to increase their incomes. Frontier Markets will implement the program and leverage its cadre of Saral Jeevan Sahelis—women entrepreneurs—to identify and onboard women-owned small businesses onto their Meri-Saheli platform. In partnership with Airtel Payments Bank, Frontier Markets will onboard eligible women-owned small businesses as business correspondents and leverage its Saheli network and platform to increase product and brand awareness and generate leads to maximize their earning opportunities. In addition, these women-owned small businesses will get access to a suite of tools, resources, and market services available in the Meri-Saheli ecosystem, offering them ways to learn how to run a successful business and earn more revenue.

“Frontier Markets has built a technology platform investing in the power of women as driving forces for commerce in rural India. Thanks to the leadership of Airtel Payments Bank and support from Mastercard, we can leverage our 10 years of efforts to reach a new level of scale, truly combining the best of global leaders' expertise and resources to support our efforts to deepen the impact that rural women have in building thriving rural markets in India,” said Ajaita Shah, Founder & CEO, Frontier Markets. “This partnership strengthens and enables social enterprises like us to thrive and implement our goals at scale.”

She Leads Bharat:Udyam will be funded by the Mastercard Impact Fund, and Mastercard will bring the catalytic capital and global expertise of its Center for Inclusive Growth to unlock tools, resources, and networks for the women-owned small businesses.

Airtel Payments Bank’s ground force and Frontier Markets’ Sahelis are already working in the field to bring this partnership to life and identify the first tranche of women-owned small businesses eligible for the program.

<![CDATA[Robot-Assisted Surgery for Narrowed Ureter of Transplanted Kidney at Fortis ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/complex-robot-assisted-surgery-for-narrowed-ureter-of-transplanted-kidney-successfully-performed-at-fortis-bannerghatta

Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta Road achieved yet another clinical milestone by successfully conducting complex Robot aided Surgery for Narrowed Ureter of a Transplanted Kidney. The patient, a 51-year-old Omani woman had previously undergone unrelated kidney transplant (kidney transplantation where the donor and recipient are not biologically related) following which her transplanted ureter was obstructed by a broken piece of ureteral stent resulting in recurrent urinary tract infections. The unique surgery was performed by a team of skilled surgeons led by Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Senior Director - Urology, Uro-Oncology, Uro-Gynaecology, Andrology, Transplant, and Robotic Surgery at Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru marks a remarkable advancement in the field of robot-assisted transplants.

51-year-old Reshma (name changed) underwent an unrelated kidney transplant a year ago in Pakistan. As part of the transplant, ureteral stenting (also known as double J stent) was done wherein a thin, flexible plastic tube was placed temporarily in the ureter to help urine pass from the kidney into the bladder. The new or transplanted kidney functioned well, however, a piece of the double J stent in the transplanted ureter was broken. Multiple attempts were made surgically by multiple hospitals in Oman to remove it, however the broken piece was left behind causing an obstruction to the transplanted ureter resulting in repeated urinary tract infections.

In order to provide temporary relief and help preserve kidney function until the underlying issue can be treated, a diversion percutaneous nephrostomy was performed wherein a small tube was inserted directly through the skin and into the kidney, guided by ultrasound. The tube was then connected to a catheter outside the body, allowing urine to bypass the blocked portion of the urinary tract and drain directly from the kidney. However, the patient had recurrent urinary tract infection needing multiple course of IV antibiotics as well as multiple ICU admissions. She was then referred to Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta where the doctors evaluated her and comprehended that this case needs an innovative approach to provide a permanent solution owing to the complexity.

Elaborating on the procedure Dr Sreeharsha Harinatha, Additional Director - Urology, Uro-Oncology, Uro-Gynaecology, Andrology, Transplant, and Robotic Surgery at Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, said, “We cut open the bladder and found the ureteric orifice (point where ureter connects to the bladder allowing urine to flow) of the transplanted kidney through which we located the level of obstruction. We then removed the nephrostomy tube which was directly inserted through the skin into the kidney and did a Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Transplant Kidney Pelvic-Cystostomy wherein, the broadened top part of the ureter which is the Pelvis was disconnected robotically from the ureter and connected to the bladder by creating an opening thereby allowing urine to pass directly into a catheter which is placed in the bladder.

Adding on Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Senior Director - Urology, Uro-Oncology, Uro-Gynaecology, Andrology, Transplant, and Robotic Surgery at Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, Chairman, Renal Sciences Specialty Council, Fortis Hospitals, India, said, “Creating a temporary pathway for the urine to bypass the obstructed area and drain into the bladder catheter on a transplanted kidney is unusual and extremely challenging. However, we successfully carried out the surgery which lasted for 3 hours and the patient was discharged two days post-surgery with a well-functioning kidney. This case is a testament of our ability to perform robot-enabled innovative techniques to enhance kidney transplant procedures, be it a transplant procedure itself or recouping unfortunate complications of transplants done elsewhere.”

Mr Akshay Oleti, Business Head, Fortis Hospitals, Bangalore said, With this achievement, Fortis Hospital Bannerghatta solidifies its position as a pioneer in the adoption of cutting-edge medical technology, furthering our mission to deliver world-class healthcare services to our community and beyond. Our commitment to research, training and innovation remains unwavering, as we continue to explore novel methods to enhance patient outcomes and improve the overall quality of life for those in need.”

<![CDATA[Paradigm Shift: Government Schools Nearing Parity With Private Schools ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/cover-story/paradigm-shift-government-schools-nearing-parity-with-private-schools

In a remarkable turn of events, government schools in India are on the verge of reaching a milestone long coveted by education advocates – achieving parity with private schools. This transformation is poised to revolutionize the educational landscape, offering new opportunities for millions of students across the nation. For far too long, private schools have held a reputation for providing superior education, leaving government schools in their shadow. However, the winds of change are sweeping through the Indian education system, promising a future where government schools can proudly stand shoulder-to-shoulder with their private counterparts.Fueling this monumental shift are the passionate students residing in rural regions whose thirst for knowledge is matched only by their eagerness to embrace mobile technology. With curiosity as their driving force, these students have unlocked a gateway to learning through the wonders of modern technology. Take, for instance, the iPrep App, a shining example of how education and innovation intersect. Over 7,000 girls from remote districts in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have joyfully immersed themselves in animated lessons spanning various subjects, transforming their learning experience. Surpassing the limitations imposed by their circumstances, these girls have become active participants in their own education, empowered by their access to educational content that was once beyond their reach. What's even more exciting is the changing landscape of internet penetration and smartphone adoption trends in rural areas. Gone are the days when these communities were disconnected from the digital world, cut off from the vast resources and possibilities it holds. A wave of technological progress has surged through the heartland of India, weaving a web of connectivity and transforming lives. With students becoming increasingly familiar with technology, smartphones, and smart TVs are prominent in government schools. Recognizing this trend, iDream Education, a leading educational organization, has developed a Learning Management System tailored specifically for Android devices. Seamlessly accessible across various platforms, this intuitive system has revolutionized the learning experience within government schools, bridging the gap between technology and education. The COVID-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst, propelling technology to the forefront of education. As schools shuttered their doors, remote learning became the lifeline for students and teachers to continue their academic journey. Even government schools embraced digital learning, signaling a significant shift in the acceptance and integration of educational technology. A shining example of this adaptation can be found in the Army Goodwill Schools of Kashmir. Despite the sudden disruption caused by the pandemic and subsequent lockdown, a digital library and a Digital Class had been established just in time. With the iPrep App, students seamlessly transitioned to learning from home, ensuring continuity in their education. This initiative reached over 4,000 students across 10 regions of Kashmir, unlocking a world of educational resources and interactive modules aligned with the J&K Board curriculum.Complementing this trend, iDream Education has achieved significant reach and learning outcomes. The organization actively collaborates with the government, corporate social responsibility initiatives, and numerous NGOs. This collective effort has led to the establishment of 16,000 smart classrooms, with a staggering 13,000 in government and rural schools, benefitting over half a million students across the country. As these promising trends continue to unfold, government schools stand poised to bridge the historical learning gaps that have plagued them for years. The government's initiatives, such as ediksha and Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, provide clear guidelines and goals for implementing digital teaching and learning in government and rural schools. These guidelines, in conjunction with digital content, learning management system, and delivery methods, which include Android-based smart classrooms, digital libraries, and personalized adaptive learning solutions, hold the key to unlocking the true potential of government schools. The vision of achieving parity between government and private schools hinges on scaling up Android-based and mobile app-based K-12 learning. It necessitates the collective efforts of the government, NGOs, and corporate social responsibility initiatives to drive this transformation. Only by working together can we create an educational landscape where government schools shine as beacons of knowledge, empowering students and providing them with opportunities equal to their private school counterparts. As the journey towards educational equality continues, iDream Education remains steadfast in its commitment to providing digital learning solutions that unlock the true potential of every student. To learn more about their initiatives, visit their website at www.idreameducation.org or reach out to them at share@idreameducation.orgAbout iDream EducationiDream Education work with a vision to facilitate universal access to learning and growth. <![CDATA[Johnson Controls Extends Philanthropic Initiative ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/johnson-controls-extends-philanthropic-initiative

Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), the global leader for smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings, today announced the expansion of its most significant philanthropic initiative, the College Partnership Program to the National Capital Region (NCR) at Don Bosco College, in Gurgaon. This expansion builds upon the program's existing presence in 32 community and technical colleges in the U.S., Canada, and Pune, India. As part of the initiative, the company is extending a $20,000 renewable grant to support scholarships and will provide a new computer lab at Don Bosco College in Delhi in lieu of the program’s NCR expansion.

In contrast to the North American program which emphasises on the training of proficient technicians, the Indian program focuses on cultivating business-oriented abilities. The 600 students enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce course have been positively impacted from the program, with approximately one-third of them being granted tuition scholarships sponsored by Johnson Controls.

The program is committed to enrolling and graduating students, especially women from historically marginalised communities in local college programs. The College Partnership Program in Pune that was initiated last year was aimed at empowering women hailing from the marginalised regions. At its crux, it shares the same mission as its North American counterpart: fostering diversity, empowering underprivileged students, and aligning college courses of study with career paths. Additionally, as part of the program, Johnson Controls’ employees have committed to supporting the students as mentors, tutors, and guest speakers to ensure their persistence through graduation.

Commenting on the development, Mitul Rustagi, Global , Vice President, Finance Center of Excellence, Johnson Controls, said, “We are thrilled to witness the tangible change that the College Partnership Program has created in Pune over the past year, and we are equally excited to unveil the expansion of the program in NCR. Through our partnership with Don Bosco College, we are taking significant strides to empower and uplift underrepresented communities by providing them access to local college programs. With this, we continue to invest in the country's bright future, fostering innovation and creating avenues for talented individuals to thrive. We look forward to the positive impact that it will bring to the community and continue to further our company's journey toward a sustainable and inclusive future.”

Johnson Controls also marked the first anniversary of its Global Finance Center of Excellence in Gurgaon, India. The cutting-edge center has played a pivotal role in Johnson Controls' global finance operations. Spanning over 85,000 square feet, the facility has grown from an initial team of 200 to over 1200 members, a 500% increase in the employee population in one year. As a company with a long-standing presence in India since 1995, it employs over 8,000 professionals across the country, with three manufacturing facilities, employing 2500 engineers.

<![CDATA[Investing With Purpose: Unleashing the Potential of CSR ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/cover-story/potential-of-csr

Importance of CSR from an Investor's Point of View

In today's ever-evolving investment landscape, the wise investor understands that financial gains no longer suffice. A new paradigm has emerged, emphasising aligning investments with personal values and nurturing a sustainable and responsible world. This thought-provoking article explores the intrinsic importance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from an investor's perspective. We uncover the transformative power of purposeful investing by delving into how CSR practices generate long-term value, enhance brand reputation, and foster sustainable financial growth.

Unlocking Long-term Value through CSR

Imagine investing in companies that go beyond profit margins and integrate social and environmental considerations into their core strategies. These visionary organisations are the trailblazers of the business world, consistently outperforming their peers in the long run. By embracing CSR, they mitigate risks, enhance operational efficiency, and cultivate a loyal customer base. Through ethical sourcing, sustainable products, and employee well-being initiatives, these companies build a resilient business model and create a sustainable competitive advantage that propels them to greater heights.

Consider the example of a renowned Indian textile company that prioritises sustainable sourcing of raw materials, ensures workers' fair wages, and minimises their carbon footprint. This commitment to CSR has garnered them a devoted customer base and attracted long-term investors who recognise the inherent value in their holistic approach. By supporting such companies, investors become catalysts for change, driving long-term value creation and fueling the wheels of progress.

Brand Reputation: The Investor's Touchstone

In today's socially conscious world, brand reputation is a vital currency that holds sway over investor sentiment. Investors seek companies demonstrating unwavering commitment to transparency, ethical practices, and stakeholder engagement. These organisations effortlessly weave CSR into their DNA, radiating trust, responsibility, and sustainability. They become beacons of hope, drawing in investors who value long-term stability and the undeniable power of positive social impact.

Consider the case of a prominent Indian consumer goods company that actively supports education initiatives in rural communities. They uplift the educational landscape and improve lives through scholarships, infrastructure development, and teacher training programs. Their persistent dedication to CSR has bolstered their brand reputation and attracted a diverse pool of investors who see the untapped potential within their mission. By aligning their investments with companies prioritising CSR, investors become integral stakeholders in a virtuous cycle of success and social betterment.

Navigating Market Dynamics: The Power of Sustainability

In a rapidly evolving business environment, sustainability is the cornerstone of success. Investors recognise that companies embracing CSR are better prepared to navigate shifting market dynamics and regulatory frameworks. By aligning themselves with global sustainability goals, these companies become industry leaders, driving positive change and reaping the rewards of their forward-thinking strategies.

Take, for instance, an Indian renewable energy company that pioneers sustainable solutions, such as solar power generation and energy-efficient technologies. By embedding CSR into their core business operations, they thrive in the competitive market and gain access to sustainable finance and capital from socially responsible investors. By supporting companies at the forefront of sustainability, investors become architects of a brighter future where financial growth intertwines harmoniously with environmental preservation.

Conclusion: Embracing the Power of Purposeful Investing

Investing with purpose transcends the boundaries of mere financial gains. It is a transformative journey that embraces the profound impact of Corporate Social Responsibility. By aligning investments with companies prioritising CSR, investors unlock the immense potential for long-term value creation, enhance brand reputation, and contribute to a sustainable and responsible business ecosystem. This paradigm shift ushers in a new era of prosperity, where profitability and positive impact are no longer distant strangers but lifelong companions on the road to a better tomorrow. <![CDATA[RDC Concrete's Project PEUSC Transforms School for Underprivileged ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/rdc-concrete-project-peusc-transforms-school-for-underprivileged

RDC Concrete, India's largest and leading independent ready-mix concrete manufacturer, proudly announces its latest initiative, Project PEUSC (Promoting Education for Underprivileged School Children). This project aims to support education initiatives for children from deprived sections of society all over India, covering over 70 similar schools. The project highlights RDC Concrete's commitment to creating a positive impact in the communities where it operates. Going beyond traditional CSR efforts, RDC Concrete aims to engage its employees actively in the process and foster meaningful connections with school students.

RDC Concrete recently undertook the renovation of Ganesh Vidyalaya, a semi-government school for underprivileged students located in Kharegaon, Kalwa near Thane. The school had been grappling with inadequate infrastructure, leading to various health issues among the children. Recognizing the importance of a safe, hygienic and positive learning environment, RDC Concrete stepped in to address these concerns ahead of the monsoon season.

The renovation efforts at Ganesh Vidyalaya were comprehensive and focused on addressing critical infrastructure needs. RDC Concrete installed a 1500-liter water tank to ensure a steady supply of clean drinking water for the students. Moreover, the installation of water purifiers further enhanced the water quality, safeguarding the health of the students. These measures will play a crucial role in reducing waterborne illnesses and ensuring the well-being of the school community.

In addition to addressing the water-related concerns, RDC Concrete repaired the existing desks, which were in a dilapidated condition, and also procured new ones to ensure comfortable seating for the students. By providing these essential amenities, RDC Concrete aims to create a conducive learning environment that fosters the growth and development of every child, ensuring they enjoy coming to school.

Mr. Anil Banchhor, MD & CEO, RDC Concrete said, “The initiative showcases RDC Concrete's efforts in supporting all sectors of the country’s growth fueled with better infrastructure and learning environment. The idea to step into the educational domain is to provide underprivileged sections and strata of students with the necessary facilities and engagement required to learn and grow. RDC Concrete through its societal initiatives, in a small way, strives to play a transformational role in helping the students to build a bright future for themselves and the country.”

Understanding the significance of active engagement with the school students, RDC Concrete has taken its commitment a step further. The company has decided to incorporate an Employee Engagement - CSR component into the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of each employee. This inclusion will encourage employees to visit the designated school that is located in the range of less than 5 KM of its plant premise and spend quality time engaging with the students, sharing their knowledge, and inspiring young minds.

The school management held an inauguration ceremony on Tuesday, June 20, to commemorate the successful completion of the project. The inauguration was attended by Shri Nand Kumar Verma IAS Ex- Additional Chief Secretary as chief guest along with Mr. Anil Banchhor, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of RDC Concrete, Dr. K. S. Bhoon, Head of Human Resources and Business Excellence at RDC Concrete & Mr. Adnan Khan, Regional Business Head.

<![CDATA[Empowering India : CSR and Its Role in the Indian Economy ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/opinion/csr-and-its-role-in-the-indian-economy

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is one most essential driving forces that bring positive change to the Indian economy. Organisations increasingly focus on sustainable development and social impact, recognising their responsibility to contribute to society's well-being. CSR drives economic growth, fuels social development, and champions environmental sustainability, shaping a brighter future for our nation.

The genesis of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in India can be attributed to the Companies Act of 2013, which made it mandatory for qualifying companies to allocate a percentage of their profits towards CSR activities. This legislative development marked a significant shift in the business landscape, recognising the broader role of corporations in addressing societal issues. Since then, CSR in India has gained momentum, with companies embracing it as a strategic tool to positively impact society while aligning with their business objectives.

Let us explore the incredible impact of CSR on the Indian economy. The following sections dive into how CSR drives economic growth, fuels social development, and champions environmental sustainability. Get ready to be inspired by the stories of change shaping our nation's future!

Driving Economic Growth: Igniting the Flames of Prosperity

Imagine a nation where everyone has access to quality education, skills, and entrepreneurial opportunities. That's the vision that CSR initiatives are turning into reality. Corporations are nurturing India's human capital by investing in education, skill development, and entrepreneurship programs. It not only empowers individuals but also fuels economic growth. A skilled workforce enhances productivity, boosts competitiveness, and propels our economy forward. So, when businesses prioritise CSR, they become architects of progress, building a brighter future for us all.

Social Development: Illuminating Paths to Inclusive Progress

Inclusive growth is not just a buzzword; it's a powerful catalyst for change. CSR initiatives are breaking barriers and fostering social development in India. From tackling poverty to championing gender equality, companies are actively engaging in community development projects. These initiatives empower marginalised communities, providing them access to education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities. By nurturing a more equitable society, CSR is sowing the seeds of progress that will bear fruit for future generations.

Environmental Sustainability: Nurturing the Earth's Legacy

Our nation is blessed with abundant natural resources but must be protected for future generations. That is where CSR steps in as the backbone of sustainability. Companies are embracing responsible business practices, from adopting renewable energy sources to reducing carbon emissions. They are taking concrete actions to preserve our environment, making India a greener and cleaner place to live. By investing in environmental conservation, CSR initiatives safeguard our natural heritage, ensuring our children inherit a thriving planet.

Let's Put the Pieces Together: Real-life Examples of Impactful CSR

Now that we understand the transformative power of CSR, let us see some incredible real-life examples of its impact. Take Tata Group, for instance. Their CSR initiatives focus on education, healthcare, and livelihood enhancement, reaching out to millions across India. Be it schools, hospitals, and skill development centres, providing opportunities and hope to the underprivileged, the group has ensured that it is giving back to the society the business depends on. Another shining example is Hindustan Unilever Limited, which has made significant strides in water conservation, hygiene, and sanitation, benefiting communities. These stories exemplify how CSR is changing lives and communities, one step at a time.

In Conclusion: Together, We Build a Brighter Tomorrow

Now that we have established the facts, it remains no secret that CSR is no longer just a buzzword—it's a call to action. Active involvement in developing society can allow businesses to contribute positively, shaping the destiny of our nation. By integrating CSR into their DNA, they become catalysts of change, propelling India towards an inclusive and prosperous future. So, let's celebrate the remarkable impact of CSR on our economy, applaud the companies making a difference, and join hands to build a brighter tomorrow. Entrepreneurs can unite and create a nation where business success intertwines with social progress, leaving a legacy that future generations will be proud of.

Remember, change starts with us, and with the spirit of CSR, businesses can pave the way for a better India—one where businesses thrive, communities flourish, and our environment flourishes. Let's embrace CSR and embark on this incredible journey of transformation.

<![CDATA[Godrej Agrovet Celebrates 25-years Of its Biostimulant: Double ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/godrej-agrovet

Godrej Agrovet Limited’s (GAVL) Crop Protection Business today announced that its bio stimulant, Double, has completed 25 years of enabling better yield for Indian farmers. Double has treated ~3 Crore acres of Indian farmland and brought prosperity to the lives of ~2 Crore farming families over the last 25 years. The company also launched a celebratory pack marking 25 years of Double and its commitment to better farming in addition to protecting farmers from counterfeit products.

Double’s new pack is user-friendly and comes in a safe packaging bottle. It has a tamper-evident seal which blasts open and falls when anyone tries to open the bottle. The label has complex watermarks to avoid duplication and the bottle also has a hologram – a unique 9-digit code on each and every bottle to ensure authenticity. While the hologram also has smartly embedded letter ‘G’ to assure the customer that the product is genuine, ‘Braille’ marking on the neck reading danger has also been added for the visually impaired.

Double, a bio stimulant, reduces flower drops and fruit shedding in cotton, soybean, groundnut and vegetable (tomato) crops. Flower drops and fruit shedding impacts farmers’ yield by 15%-25%. Proper farming practices, coupled with the right dosage of Double, can aid farmers in increasing their yield. In Cotton, Double aids in better fertilization, thereby enabling better seed setting (a key developmental stage in the process of seed formation) and stronger pod (a rounded mature fruit) foundation. On average, two applications of Double aid in enhancing yield by 18%-20%. Similar application of Double on Soybean and Groundnut crops helps the crop overcome the fertilization barriers, reduces flower dropping, and improves pod setting resulting in increase in yield by 30%-35% and 10%-12% respectively. For Tomato, it helps improve the viability of the pollen and improves flower-to-fruit conversion, resulting in reduced flower dropping and more fruits per plant, uniform size, color and improved fruit weight by 15%-18% depending on the crop.

Commenting on 25 years of Double, Balram Singh Yadav, Managing Director, GAVL said, “Double was launched with an objective to help farmers increase yield of their crops. Since its inception, we have touched the lives of ~2 Crore Indian farmers and have witnessed an average 18% increase in yield and hence income of our Indian farmers. We are confident that a product like Double, if used in proper quantity and at right time, would aid farmers to further enhance their yield and income in addition to ensuring food security of our nation.”

GAVL started working extensively on Homobrassinolide (HBR), a raw material for Double, in 1992. Witnessing its role in improving cell division and cell elongation in crops, the company launched Double in 1998, enabling farmers to leverage its benefits. In addition to reducing flower drop and fruit shedding, a biostimulant like Double also aids in enhancing a crop’s ability to withstand biotic and abiotic stresses.

Abiotic stress includes temperature, ultraviolet radiation, salinity, floods, drought etc, which impacts crop plants while biotic stress refers to damage caused by insects, herbivores, fungi, bacteria or weeds.

Burjis Godrej, Executive Director, GAVL highlighting the importance of biostimulants said, “70% of yield gap globally is dictated by climate change<1>. In India too, soaring temperature and erratic rainfall continue to impact crop yield and favor weed & pest proliferation. It is under such unfavorable conditions that biostimulants aid in enhancing the yield of the crops. The global and Indian biostimulant market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.8% and 12.5% respectively by 2031. Hence, as the world’s largest producer of HBR, we at GAVL will continue serving Indian farmers by offering different biostimulants as per their crop requirement.”

India is one of among the few countries around the world to define a separate regulations for biostimulants. With the unorganized biochemical sector, worth ~INR 1,640 Cr, being one of the fastest growing subsectors, the guidelines released in 2021 mandates manufacturers to label the products to include chemical composition and expiry date, as well as mandatory prior registration with the government.

Commenting on the importance of regulation, Rajavelu N.K, CEO, Crop Protection Business, GAVL said, “A farmer invests in a crop protection product with a hope of achieving optimum yield from their crop. With 85% of Indian farmers being small and marginalized, it is imperative to provide them a quality product which is genuine and easy to use. Hence, while setting up the regulation is a first step, there is a need for industry-wide collaboration to create awareness amongst the farmers by educating them on the benefits surrounding usage of authentic product in appropriate and recommended quantity.”

The new packaging of Double is aligned to the guidelines laid down by the government and convenient to use.

Climate crisis has cost India 5 million hectares of crop in 2021. With pest & diseases and poor agricultural practice impacting the yield too, GAVL believes that it is need of the hour for the industry to create awareness around Crop Protection – utilizing Right Product at the Right Time & Right Spray – and importance of Biostimulants along with Integrated Pest Management.

<![CDATA[P&G India Installs Rainwater Harvesting Infrastructure At Schools ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/rainwater-harvesting-infrastructure-at-schools

Following World Environment Day, P&G India – the maker of brands like Whisper and Vicks, announced that as part of its water conservation efforts in water-stressed regions in the country, the Company has installed rainwater harvesting (RWH) infrastructure at P&G Shiksha supported schools in nine cities. The initiative has been executed in partnership with Round Table India, across Kota, Ahmedabad, Jodhpur, Baddi, Udaipur, Bhopal, Chennai, Raipur, and Pondicherry.

With this, the rainwater harvesting infrastructures will cumulatively help preserve an estimated 10 lakh litres of water annually, which can then be used by the schools for non-potable purposes. By conserving rainwater, the initiative further aims to reduce dependency and usage of the municipal water supply by these school and help recharge the ground water table. In addition, the accessibility of rainwater harvesting infrastructure at schools is enabling the younger generation even in lesser privileged areas, to imbibe the basic understanding and need for sustainable practices from a young age. The initiative is in line with P&G’s endeavour to contribute towards building a water positive future through sustainable practices and interventions.

P&G Shiksha is the flagship CSR program of P&G India, and through the rainwater harvesting initiative, the Company aims to amalgamate education and sustainability to ensure that the future generation inculcates sustainable practices right from an early age.

Pawan Verma, Head – Purchases and Environmental Sustainability, P&G India said, "At P&G, we recognize the importance of water conservation and its profound implications for sustainable development. One of the ways we want to work towards this, is by building transformative partnerships to help solve some of the world’s most pressing global challenges where we can make the biggest difference. Therefore, in partnership with Round Table India, we are piloting a new approach where we are introducing rain water harvesting as a sustainable practice at Shiksha supported schools in water stressed basins. This initiative not only ensures access to clean non-potable water for students but also instils a sense of environmental responsibility and empowers them to become future advocates for a sustainable world.”

The initiative comes close behind the global water strategy that P&G announced recently. Through the strategy, the Company aims to reduce water usage in its operations, responding to water challenges through innovation and partnerships, and supporting projects in 18 water-stressed areas around the world. Among these, 5 such water-stressed areas are in India where P&G India aims to make a meaningful impact by restoring and revitalizing water resources for the benefit of the communities and the environment at large.

<![CDATA[BPCL Celebrates W.E.D By Saving 2.5 Billion Litres of Water in 2023 ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/bpcl-celebrates-world-environment-day-by-saving-billion-litres-of-water-in-2023

On the occasion of World Environment Day, BPCL is proud to announce a significant milestone in water conservation. Through its relentless commitment to sustainable practices, BPCL has successfully saved an impressive 2.5 billion litres of water in the year 2023. This accomplishment not only highlights BPCL's dedication to environmental stewardship but also demonstrates the positive impact that collective efforts can have on our precious water resources.

Water scarcity is a pressing global issue, and BPCL recognizes the urgency to address it. By implementing various innovative initiatives and robust water management strategies, BPCL has been able to make a substantial difference. The amount of water saved by BPCL is equivalent to fulfilling the annual water needs of approximately 50,000 families. This achievement underscores BPCL's mission to contribute to a sustainable future and preserve natural resources for generations to come.

In a poignant video released by BPCL, the stark contrast between water usage in urban cities and rural villages is vividly depicted. The video sheds light on the careless wastage of water that often occurs in urban areas, where people leave taps running while performing daily chores. Meanwhile, individuals in rural villages endure hours of waiting in queues just to obtain a basic necessity like water. The stark contrast serves as a wake-up call for all of us to be mindful of our water consumption and adopt responsible practices.

BPCL remains committed to water conservation and has made it an integral part of its corporate sustainability agenda. Through its dedicated efforts and the implementation of various initiatives such as Project BOOND, in which BPCL has brought about transformative changes. This milestone is a testament to BPCL's commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Project BOOND has brought about transformative changes in over 230 villages across Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh. By employing innovative methods such as rainwater harvesting, well renovation, tank desiltation, and the construction of various water conservation structures, BPCL has augmented water availability and increased groundwater levels. The program's sustainability is ensured through close community participation and "Shramdaan." BPCL's efforts not only address water scarcity but also instill a sense of responsibility towards water usage and promote the adoption of sustainable practices.

On this World Environment Day, BPCL urges individuals, communities, and organizations to join hands in conserving water. Together, we can make a substantial difference and ensure that our future generations inherit a planet with abundant water resources. Let us remember that every drop counts and that our collective actions today will shape a sustainable tomorrow.

<![CDATA[On World Environment Day Tata Tea Launches Latest Edition of Jaago Re ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/on-world-environment-day-tata-tea-launches-latest-edition-of-jaago-re

On World Environment Day, Tata Tea launched its latest edition of #JaagoRe, aimed at spreading awareness on a cause which is the most defining crisis of our time – Climate Change.

Climate change is no longer a distant threat, it is a reality that demands our immediate and urgent attention. The impact of this global crisis is affecting our planet which poses a serious threat to the future of our children.

Since 2007, Tata Tea’s Jaago Re campaigns have been instrumental in stirring change on-ground, with impactful solutions for the larger society and their collective issues. From challenges related to corruption, elections, women empowerment, and Covid-19 awareness, ‘Jaago Re’ has aimed to give social responsibility a new meaning. Tata Tea understands the urgency and importance of addressing climate change and is leveraging its iconic platform to issue a clarion call to bring the critical issue to the forefront of public consciousness.

Tata Tea Jaago Re, through its new TVC, uses popular nursery rhymes as a device to make the message of fighting against climate change more relatable and personal to parents. Conceptualized by Mullen Lintas Bangalore, the film depicts how the favorite poems of our times may look very different in future if we don’t act now! Popular nursery rhymes like Jack and Jill, Machli Jal ki Rani, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Rain Rain Go Away are shown with modified verses, portraying a potentially grim reality and a damaged world that could be left behind for our kids, because of our apathy and inaction.

Jack and Jill went up the hill…

To fetch a pail of water…

But all the water had dried up

The world was now much hotter

So Jack and Jill sat on the hill

Their throats were so dry

They couldn’t find a drop to drink…

And one day… neither will I…

…”

To facilitate change, the film implores consumers to adopt simple actionable ways to contribute to fight climate change, which otherwise appears to be a complex and insurmountable problem. Consumers can visit Jaagore.com to pledge their support, get tips to adopt a sustainable lifestyle and inspire others by sharing their stories of fight against climate change.

Commenting on the initiative, Puneet Das, President - Packaged Beverages (India & South Asia), Tata Consumer Products said, “Tata Tea Jaago Re has always believed in raising the society’s collective consciousness on key social issues of our times and there is nothing more pressing than the need to fight against Climate Change for the world’ future. While climate change and its negative impacts have long been discussed, it is critical to understand how children are rendered the most vulnerable in this context. The current edition of Tata Tea JaagoRe is based on the most basic parenting insight of protecting our children and ensuring that we do everything to give them a better future. This year, we are using popular nursery rhymes to portray how the childhood of our kids could look very different from ours if we don’t act now!

We hope that this makes the issue of climate change very personal and relatable leading to a wider behavioral change in our society by each individual.”

Sharing his thoughts on the uniqueness of the campaign, Hari Krishnan, CEO, Mullen Lintas said “Tata Tea Jaago Re is not a campaign but one of the longest running purpose-led movements. As a thought-leader Tata Tea has always held a mirror to the society and this time it’s no different as the brand has embraced climate change as a cause. This year we have upped the ante, by having kids making the point in a hard-hitting way. Because it is their generation that has to suffer the consequences of our actions. We have hit a sweet spot with our creative device where we have turned popular children’s rhymes into resounding messages about climate change, voiced by the little ones, making it even more impactful. We want this awakening to lead to a positive change in the society.”

<![CDATA[Quality Eye Care Services To Reach Urban Slum Populations In Chennai ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/quality-eye-care-services-to-reach-urban-slum-populations-in-chennai

To increase access to quality eye health services through an integrated and strengthened urban health service delivery system, Standard Chartered Global Business Services (GBS) Private Limited, India collaborated with Sightsavers India to launch two new Vision Centres and one Mobile Vision Centre in Chennai.

Standard Chartered Global Business Services (GBS) Private Limited will be financially supporting the two vision centres and a mobile vision centre for uptake of eye health care in the city for a span of four years. Sightsavers India, a development organisation working on avoidable blindness and disability inclusion will be partnering with India Vision Institute for the two Vision Centres wherein the intervention seeks to identify more than 6,000 people with cataracts and refer them for surgery, screen over 60,000 people for eye care, and dispense more than 8,000 spectacles over next four years. Nearly, 2,000 people will also be screened for diabetic retinopathy.

For the Mobile Vision Centre, Sightsavers India collaborated with Sankara Eye Hospital as its implementing partner. The intervention through this initiative seeks to refract nearly 30,000 people, dispense 6,000 spectacles, identify more than 4,000 patients for cataracts and screen 2,000 people for diabetic retinopathy over 4 years.

The van is a fully fitted eye health set-up with a dedicated team. Using a compact mobile van has proven to be a very successful approach owing to its easy mobility in dense areas, easy access to reach more significant people in their locations and on-the-spot advanced eye screening services.

Head – Sustainability, Standard Chartered Bank & Global Business Services, Ms Karuna Bhatia said, “To ensure accessible eye care for communities in urban slums, Standard Chartered Global Business Services Private Limited has partnered with Sightsavers India to take comprehensive primary eye care services to the doorsteps of people and provide affordable eye care services to marginalised urban communities. The focus is on early detection of eye ailments, referral, and appropriate treatment. Standard Chartered through its Seeing is Believing project has been a long-standing partner of Sightsavers India working in remote and underserved regions of the country. Serving communities will always be at the heart of Standard Chartered. "

Sightsavers India CEO, Mr RN Mohanty said, “The two new Vision Centres and a Mobile Vision Centre in Chennai were launched with the objective of reducing the prevalence of visual impairment that aligns with the target set by the National Programme for the Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI). The approach is aligned with the WHO Health Systems Strengthening framework. The launch of these initiatives with support from Standard Chartered Global Business Services Private Limited, will reduce the gap between eye health needs and service delivery demand by improving access to eye care services for the underserved population.”

IVI's CEO Vinod Daniel said, "The vision centres will help make a positive impact on people's lives. With a clear vision, there will be more work opportunities, increased efficiency, and improved productivity. It will also make people, particularly the elderly, regain self-confidence and less vulnerable to accidents and falls."

"Vision screening services and corrective glasses will be available at the vision centres at affordable prices, and free corrective glasses provided to those who are unable to pay. The new centres will complement our existing vision centre in Palavakkam," he said.

“We have screened some 300,000 people in the Greater Chennai area. More than 90 percent of both underprivileged adults and children from corporation schools we have vision screened were first-time users of spectacles. The compliance rate among them is very high,” Mr Daniel added.

Trustee & Executive Director, Sankara Eye Hospital, Pammal, Wg Cdr V Shankar (Retd) said, “The Mobile Vision Centre is a force multiplier in addressing avoidable and curable visual impairment. While eye hospitals and static vision centres do provide options for people seeking eye care, the fact that the facility is made available literally at one’s doorstep is bound to encourage timely eye care-seeking behaviour. We at Sankara believe that our work in the cause of avoidable blindness has been significantly strengthened by this addition to our armamentarium. We are very grateful to Sightsavers and Standard Chartered Global Business Services for the opportunity to partner with them in our mission for vision.”

<![CDATA[Ashoka University Appoints Dr. Leena Srivastava As Head ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/ashoka-university-appoints-dr-leena-srivastava-as-head

Ashoka University today announced the appointment of Dr. Leena Srivastava as the Director and Head of the recently launched Ashoka Centre for a People-Centric Energy Transition (ACPET). The Centre was established in March 2023 with a vision to become a knowledge institution in support of economic growth, energy security and net-zero targets of India and the Global South. In its debut project, the Centre is working on a draft Integrated Energy Policy for India.

Commenting on her appointment, Dr. Leena Srivastava said, "The progress on implementation of impactful, ambitious and sustainable energy interventions for climate action has been limited largely due to the challenges of overcoming siloed approaches to energy transitions. There is an urgency to facilitate greater collaborations within and among different stakeholders from the academia, government, private organisations and the scientific community in order to formulate an integrated approach. It requires identifying and addressing the existing barriers to catalyse progress on actionable energy and climate action. The conception of ACPET is a result of this vision and I am privileged to lead the institution. I am hopeful that it will play a critical role in creating the roadmap for impactful collaborations in this space.”

Dr. Leena Srivastava is currently a member of SDG7 Technical Advisory Group of the United Nations. Previously, she has served at notable institutions such as the National Security Advisory Board (Government of India), Asian Development Bank, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI, Delhi) and The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA, Vienna) in various capacities. She was also a coordinating Lead Author of the 3rd Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Report and cross-cutting theme Anchor on “Sustainable Development” for the 4th IPCC Report.

“I welcome Dr. Srivastava in her new role as the Director and Head of ACPET. The Centre will greatly benefit from her leadership, expertise and decades of experience, especially the stellar body of work that she brings from her stints at various important national and multilateral institutions. Under her leadership, the Centre would continue to extensively work towards the goal of helping our country in its energy transition journey, especially in a manner that does not compromise the needs of the most vulnerable groups of our society today,” said Somak Raychaudhury, Vice Chancellor, Ashoka University.

<![CDATA[Raigarh Includes Blockchain To Monitor Industrial CSR Tree Plantation ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/cover-story/raigarh-includes-blockchain-to-monitor-industrial-csr-tree-plantation

The Raigarh District Administration has launched a sustainable Blockchain Based Monitoring System for tracking industrial Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) plantation activities in the city. Utilizing NEAR Protocol’s fast and low cost operational platform and the innovative technological offerings of Airchains, a cutting-edge blockchain-based middleware SaaS solution, the administration is determined to make significant elevations to the tree plantation mechanism to enable transparency, traceability, and accountability within the sector and regenerate its lost greenery.

Raigarh as a district is home to several industries, including steel, power, and cement, among others. These industries have been actively engaged in CSR activities, including plantation drives, to contribute to the local community and environment. However, ensuring that industries abide by their commitments and monitor the progress of plantation activities is a daunting task for district administrations. The administration also faces a significant challenge of verifying the accuracy of the reports shared by industries outlining their tree plantation and CSR initiatives which requires serious capital and labour.

Leveraging blockchain technology that has been increasingly penetrating different sectors due to its secure, transparent, and immutable nature provides for the perfect solution. The blockchain based monitoring system, developed by Airchains, is focused on providing accurate, immutable, verifiable, and real-time information to the stakeholders of the project along with ensuring the listed industries are compliant with the regulations related to the plantation sector.

“The Raigarh District is elated to partner with NEAR Protocol and Airchains to launch the blockchain based monitoring system. We are committed to the cause of bringing back the flora and fauna of the area and believe that it is pertinent to hold companies accountable to their CSR initiatives in a seamless and transparent manner. This initiative aligns with our commitment to sustainable development and environmental conservation. Furthermore, we can monitor any deviation or delay in our progress and take the required corrective actions within stipulated time.” Shri Taran Prakash Sinha, IAS, Collector & District Magistrate commented.

“The initiative to incorporate blockchain technology to enable a trackable and verified system for our industrial CSR efforts is a step forward towards a greener tomorrow. The key problems of the sector can be placated with the use of this immutable tech designed to reduce inefficiencies and capital consumption by providing an automated and accurate alternative. Enabling real time data monitoring and access to the public and any stakeholders, we are nurturing transparency in otherwise opaque administrative processes for the public.” Shri Abinash Mishra, IAS , Zilla Panchayat CEO, Raigarh Chhattisgarh added.

The system provides different functionalities including a unique Tree Aadhaar for easy tracking and storing of data, dashboard login for district administration and listed industries, and the latest plantation data covering holistic aspects such as type, location, time, date, number of trees planted. Additionally, the platform has a smooth user interface designed for listed industries to feed information readily into the system and tracks real-time Air Quality Index (AQI) which is accessible to any visitor to depict the direct effect of these afforestation efforts for public and stakeholders consumption.

“We are honoured to partner with the Raigarh District administration to fulfill their sustainability and CSR objectives. Through this system, they have established a groundbreaking precedence of establishing transparency and traceability to the CSR initiatives in the district and are leading the way with their technological adoption. We believe that this system will set a new standard for sustainable forest management and inspire other governments and organizations to adopt similar initiatives.” Ankur Rakhi Sinha, Co-founder and CEO, Airchains

"We are thrilled to be partnering with Raigarh District Administration to empower sustainable development through blockchain technology. As a public sector player in the forefront of innovation for the public good, they are leading the way in India and we are happy to be a positive catalyst to their initiative with our solution." said Arpit Sharma, Managing Director, India, SE Asia, and Middle East.

The one-of-its-kind project has two phases of implementation with the first phase including the onboarding of industries, verifying data relating to their tree plantation activities, generating a unique Tree Aadhaar for each tree, and monitoring their maintenance. The second phase aims to monitor the effectiveness of this system for better future planning and geographical assessment. Along with that, the system will further monitor the carbon footprint or lack thereof, to present opportunities for the district administration to leverage carbon credits.

<![CDATA[Where Few Venture ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/cover-story/where-few-venture

Whether it is buying clothes for a wedding, going to the market, seeking employment, or accessing healthcare, the only way in and out of Palsavade in Maharashtra’s Satara district is a milk van. The vehicle comes to the village to collect milk every morning at 8 am and drops those who get abroad the same evening. Miss the van in the morning and the villagers either have to walk for hours or wait until the next day when the van picks them up again.

The cost of using the van to get to the closest town of Parali, 15 kilometers away, and back is Rs. 100 – a steep amount for the migrant worker families that live here. Without the availability of public transport, the milk van becomes a lifeline as the roads leading to the village are rocky and rough. During medical emergencies, however, it is this distance and remoteness that can turn fatal.

Tucked away in the hills of Satara district in south-eastern Maharashtra, India’s most prosperous state, Palsavade is a picturesque village surrounded by a forest, water bodies, and the famous Sajjangarh hill, glowing with golden hues as the sun sets each evening. Inhabited by the Dhangar community, a nomadic tribe, this small village has only 20 houses and 95 people, including 15 children aged five and under.

Despite its remoteness, the streetlights scattered around the village have solar panels and all households have electricity. Water is abundant too as a water pipeline from the nearby dam of Palsawade Dharan runs through the village, barring the houses located on top of the hill. In some places, the residents have also created a stream from malfunctioning taps that reroute water to their farmlands and keep the crops well irrigated.

Nestled far from any town, there are no shops in the village, limiting not just the use of packaged foods but also plastic – making Palsavade almost plastic-free.

However, with beauty come many, many challenges.

The hilly terrain, access to a water body, and vegetation make Palsavade a haven for wild animals. This poses a major problem as keeping the fields – where villagers grow wheat, paddy, and finger millets – safe from monkeys, wild buffaloes, and wild boars is a major challenge. Whatever is left of the destruction of crops, along with cattle and poultry rearing, is just enough to feed themselves to sustain. Selling cattle milk does not fetch enough income either, making migration a necessity.

With no jobs available in the village, at least one male member from each household migrates to bigger cities such as Satara, Pune, and Mumbai in search of better prospects. While most men drive trucks and tempos, some women go with them and work as housemaids in the city. “We don’t like to migrate to Satara and Mumbai, but for our livelihood, we have to,” says one of the villagers.

Those who work at Satara visit the village once a week and carry back with them essential items and vegetables from the town. Those who work in Mumbai visit once a month or once every two months.

For the women who stay back in the village, life in the hills becomes even more difficult as they are forced to shoulder the responsibilities of running the households, caregiving for children and elderly, and cattle rearing and farming. Women living in houses on the higher reaches have to walk down the hill to fetch water from the stream, carrying heavy pots back home, adding to their already growing list of responsibilities.

Reshma, 24, with her husband Ramdas, three-month-old son Shivansh, and two-year-old son Rajveer outside her house in Palsavade village in Satara district, Maharashtra.

Palsavade houses an Anganwadi center (rural child-care center) and a Zilla Parishad school (district council-run school) for children studying up till class 7. Both are one room small and located beside each other. Five children are enrolled in the Anganwadi center looked after by two teachers who come to the village from Parali every day.

After class 7, the children go downhill to Parali or other towns in the district. The distance means children are either irregular at school or physically stretch themselves each time they go – both having an impact on their learning and development.

27-year-old Sangeeta’s health has taken a backseat in the last few years. Every day, she wakes up early, tends to the cattle, fetches water from the downhill steam, prepares breakfast for her children, two-and-half-year-old Devansh and four-and-a-half-year-old Prince, and gets Prince ready for the Anganwadi center – all in just two to three hours. “I am barely able to take care of myself since my husband is mostly out for work,” she says, adding that she has stopped lactating for a while, depriving her younger son of vital nutrients from breast milk. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends exclusively breastfeeding the baby for the first six months and then continuing to breastfeed for up to two years and beyond.

In times of sickness, the villagers often rely on home remedies as reaching government health services requires them to navigate the hilly terrains that are especially dangerous in the monsoon. The closest primary health center is located about 7 km away from this village, while the district hospital is 30 km away. The terrain further impedes the access of ambulances, which are especially critical to ensure safe deliveries and provide emergency care.

Balanced diets are a challenge

Rice, rice flour bhakris, and wheat flour rotis feature in the daily diets of Palsavade residents. Non-vegetarian populations reported frequent consumption of meat (chicken and mutton) or eggs. Commonly available vegetables, such as cabbage and eggplant, along with locally grown green leafy vegetables and dal (split green gram) feature in some meals. The consumption of fish is relatively low – twice or thrice a month – due to low availability and inaccessibility to the market.

For breakfast, women make items like rotis, tea, poha, upma, vermicelli, or sheera (semolina boiled with sugar and milk).

Swati, 29, feeds her two-year-old daughter Pari in Palsavade village in Satara district, Maharashtra. For dinner, she has cooked stir-fried green leafy vegetables with garlic and cumin seeds. She will also serve the leftover potato curry from lunch with rice flour roti and rice.

On the face of it, the residents of Palsavade seem to consume a healthy and nutritious diet, even with the constraints of living in difficult terrain. However, the frequency of achieving a balanced diet remains low.

One mother told us, “We do the heavy work, but our diet isn’t as good compared to the workload.”

In the fifth round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the nutritional indicators of Satara district show that 20% of under-five children are stunted and wasted with only 16% consuming the minimum adequate diet. On the other hand, anemia is prevalent in 50% of all women and 29% of pregnant women aged 15 to 49 years.

Sangeeta affirmed this point by recalling that when her son Devansh was born, he weighed 2.5 kg while she weighed 55 kg, both less than the healthy range. Now at two-and-a-half years, Devansh weighs 9.6 kg, still less than the ideal weight.

Community health workers pave the way

The role of Anganwadi workers in keeping the indicators from further deteriorating is undeniable. These community health workers play a big role in increasing the uptake of optimal nutritional habits, as they have a deep connection with the community. They serve lunch and snacks to the children coming to the Anganwadi center, provide guidance to mothers on health and sanitation and spread awareness on low-cost food.

This has reaped some benefits, an Anganwadi worker tells us. “Recently, three babies were born weighing 3 kg each, which is in the healthy range,” she says.

Anganwadi workers also work closely with pregnant women in the village, advising them on timely hospital admission for deliveries. They conduct anthropometric measurements of children and follow recommended referral protocols in case of acute/severe malnutrition.

During our visit, Parvati, a cook in the Anganwadi center, was learning how to make ‘thalipeth’ from other Anganwadi workers. Thalipeeth is a type of flatbread made with the flour of lentils, wheat, rice, and sorghum and spices like turmeric powder, cumin seeds, and red chili powder. She told us that she is learning the recipe to introduce mothers and children to a healthy and nutritious dish that they too can cook.

Welcoming the girl child

Among the various programs the Anganwadi workers take up is the promotion of maternal nutrition through the ‘Godh Bharai’ ceremony under the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign. In this ceremony, the new mother’s closest female family members and friends are invited to celebrate the onset of motherhood, focusing specifically on the birth of a girl child. Performed at the home of the new mother, in the presence of other villagers, the Godh Bharai ceremony involves chanting a prayer for the good health of the child, distributing Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) material on the importance of nutrition, vaccinations, and regular medical check-ups, and clearing the doubts of the new mother.

Vaishali and her newborn daughter sit as the Anganwadi workers and villagers perform the ‘Godh Bharai’ ceremony in Palsavade village in Satara district, Maharashtra.

Reaching the unreached

Despite the hard-to-reach nature of this village, Vitamin Angels in India with support from partners like OmniActive Health Technologies (OA) reaches these areas through local grassroots NGOs like Swayam Samajik Vikas Sanstha. By providing access to life saving interventions like vitamin A supplementation and deworming at the doorstep, efforts are being made to ensure last mile coverage so that each child has equal opportunities for a healthy, thriving life.

<![CDATA[The Partition Museum In Delhi's Dara Shikoh Library Opens To Public ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/the-partition-museum

The Partition Museum, built inside the Dara Shikoh Library Building in New Delhi, is now open to the public after an inauguration by the Government of Delhi on May 18th to coincide with celebrations around International Museum Day. To preserve and further understanding of this crucial time in India’s history in collaboration with The Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust (TAACHT), Embassy Group, one of India’s leading developers, contributed Rs. 30 lakh towards the restoration of the museum and illumination for the building.

Jitu Virwani, Chairman & MD, Embassy Group, said, "I congratulate Lady Kishwar Desai and the Government of Delhi on the inauguration of the Partition Museum. It brings me immense joy to be associated with TAACHT and their efforts to preserve and promote our understanding of this vital time in our history. Embassy Group is honoured to have the opportunity to support this significant monument and contribute towards its restoration. This museum will serve as an homage to all the families who were displaced during this time. We remain committed to this initiative and look forward to the completion of the gallery that will be dedicated to the Lost Homeland of Sindh in the coming months, with the support of The Sindhi Culture Foundation."

Lady Kishwar Desai, Chair of The Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust (TAACHT), added, “The opening of the Partition Museum in Delhi, at the Dara Shikoh Library Building, has been a long-awaited dream for The Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust (TAACHT) and would not have been possible without the support of Jitu Virwani and his amazing team at the Embassy Group. The Embassy Group has very generously, through CSR funds, helped TAACHT illuminate this magnificent building. Without these funds, the building lay in darkness for decades and was in a dilapidated condition when we first began working here in 2019–2020. The illumination has promoted the adaptive re-use of the historic building to set up both the Partition Museum and a cultural hub on the premises. Now we are looking forward to the further support of Jitu Virwani and the Embassy Group to create the world’s first gallery dedicated to The Lost Homeland of Sindh, along with The Sindhi Culture Foundation. We do hope other corporates will follow suit and take up similar CSR initiatives to support work on the preservation of art, culture, and heritage. These are legacy projects and will hugely benefit not just heritage and tourism but future generations as well.”

<![CDATA[Empowering Chhau Artisans In Purulia ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/empowering-chhau-artisans-in-purulia

Genius Foundation, the CSR arm of the leading human resources organization, Genius Consultants Ltd., and Ascensive Educare have collaborated on a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at promoting the skill and entrepreneurship development of local Chhau artisans in Purulia, West Bengal. The initiative is designed to help these artisans globalize their unique crafts and artistry.

Chhau is a traditional dance form that originated in the eastern Indian states of West Bengal, Odisha, and Jharkhand. The Chhau dance is accompanied by masks, costumes, and other artifacts that are intricately designed and crafted by local artisans. However, despite the beauty and cultural significance of Chhau art, it has remained largely unrecognized outside of the region.

This program aims to strengthen the Chhau artisans of Purulia by providing them with the necessary training, resources, and infrastructure to help them expand their business and reach a global audience. The program will offer training in various areas, including design, marketing, and financial management.

Genius Foundation and Ascensive Educare have committed to providing the artisans with access to modern technology and equipment, which will enable them to create high-quality products that meet global standards. <![CDATA[Accelerating Care Economy in India ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/g20-empower-and-women-entrepreneurship-program-event

There is a need to come together to create a stimulating environment for a child’s first few months as more challenges crop up after the first six months of the child’s upbringing . And it’s pivotal that both parents share equal responsibility in engaging, interacting and teaching foundational skills to their youngest children

“We need to come together to create a stimulating environment for a child’s first 1000 days. A child is born loaded with information and millions of neuronal connections. If one is not stimulated intellectually, those neuronal connections start to fade. . more care is needed for the child . Both private and public sectors need to sit together to think about increasing the maternity leave of the mothers from present Six months to Nine months protecting the livelihood “ said Dr Vinod K Paul, Member , NITI Aayog, while speaking at an event “Accelerating the Care Economy in India” organised by FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) under the aegis of G20 Empower Jan Bhagidari and Women Entrepreneurship Program (WEP) here today ,

“For a year old child the food required is far more than what the child consumed in first Six months these is need to bring systemic change in parents ways of bringing up the child as it is not only duty of the mother to look after the child , the Indian family system which includes father, grandparents needs to do more as these are formative years of the child “ said Dr Paul.

“ The private or should help the NITI Aayog to design the comprehensive care of the children by opening more creches for children for better upbringing as well as doing the needful for the elderly care . AS millions of care workers will be needed in future we have to develop systematic soft and hard skilling training “ said Dr Paul

“ The global care economy, the paid and unpaid labour related to caregiving such as childcare, elder care, and domestic chores, is a critical sector that enhances economic growth, gender equity, and women’s empowerment. Care work is economically valuable but globally undervalued. Is Unpaid Care Work the missing link in the analysis of gender gaps in labour outcomes. The care economy is critical to the functioning of our society and backbone of the entire economy, globally, women and girls contribute more than 70 percent of total global caregiving hours both paid and unpaid and perform more than 75 percent of unpaid care work. The truth is - Care economy is economically valuable but globally undervalued. In India, the biggest lacunae is that we lack a system for properly identifying care economy workers, and relative to other nations, India’s public spending on the care economy is extremely low. It is less than 1% of GDP.” said Ms Sudha Shivkumar, President, FICCI ladies Organisation (FLO) while speaking on the occasion .

“Investing in the care economy is essential for several reasons. It is essential to ensure that care workers are adequately compensated for their work and that they have access to safe and decent working conditions. This includes providing them with fair wages, benefits, and protections, as well as investing in their training and professional development. Investing in the care economy is critical for promoting gender equality. The majority of care work is performed by women, and the undervaluation of care work reinforces gender inequalities and perpetuates gender-based discrimination. Ultimately, investing in the care economy is an investment in our shared future. It is essential for promoting social and economic justice, for advancing gender equality, and for creating a more sustainable and equitable society for all.” Ms Shivkumar said.

Those present at the program included Ms Anna Roy, Senior Director, NITI Aayog & Mission Director, Women Entrepreneurship program (WEP), Dr. Sangita Reddy, Chair, G20 EMPOWER, Debjani Ghosh, President, NASSCOM , Ms Jyoti Vij, Additional Director General, FICCI, Ms Sakshi Khurana, NITI Aayog, Elena and Perez Villanueva, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of Spain

<![CDATA[Sightsavers India Launches STAR, Android-based App ]]>https://www.csrlive.in/trending-stories/sightsavers-india-launches-star

Sightsavers India, a leading NGO that works towards eliminating avoidable blindness and promoting equality for people with disabilities, has developed an online app called "Student Tracking Assessment and Reporting (STAR)" to track the progress of visually impaired children in their inclusive education program. The tool has been designed to collect basic information, set baseline data of the children, capture progressive data of the Children with Visual Impairment (CVI), and generate reports based on monitoring of field-based activities.

Inclusive education is a key focus area for Sightsavers India, and the organization aims to ensure that children who are visually impaired are included in mainstream education for their overall development and inclusion. Blindness creates a cycle of illiteracy, poverty, and social exclusion for visually impaired children, making them one of the most vulnerable groups in the world. Sightsavers India supports inclusive education to break this cycle, promoting a positive and enabling environment in schools, families, and communities to support the holistic education of children with visual impairment. This is facilitated by the availability of assistive devices and accessible educational material, provision of compensatory skills training, infrastructure accessibility, and building education management and leadership, among others.

The STAR app will be used by the IE Facilitator (Inclusive Education), who will be responsible for collecting the information from the child through the app. The District Project Coordinator will be responsible for monitoring the data entries and ensuring timely submission of the data of their district, maintaining timeliness, completeness, accuracy, relevance, and reliability through the tool.

The STAR app has several features, including the ability to capture data both in offline and online mode, capture data on a real-time basis, mandatory fields that the user must fill in, the requirement to save data to move to the next page/section to avoid loss of data, the ability to review and verify data before submission, and the inbuilt functionality of the device.

Sightsavers India is currently implementing the inclusive education program in seven states, namely Jharkhand, Odisha, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh., with the district as a unit of intervention. The program focuses on training general and specialist teachers to aid the inclusion process in the classroom, prepare visually impaired students for the classroom, provide one-on-one help to children in the classroom, and teach visually impaired children skills such as Braille.

"The STAR app is a significant milestone for us in our inclusive education program," said RN Mohanty, CEO of Sightsavers India. "We believe that this tool will help us track the progress of visually impaired children more effectively and support our mission of promoting inclusive education in India."
